And 'Spring in Tuscany, early May. Arrival at Pisa airport, the air smells different, drier, lighter and brighter, with the seductive scent of some flower scent, even amid the concrete quickly airports everywhere. They travel light, or as easily as you can if your camera bag is your hand luggage and could not stand to leave behind. Not when the mission is a whistle-stop orchid show is to seek, as so many different kinds of orchids Photographywe find, in less than a week.
Rent a car location, we left behind Pisa and take to the hills, a winding road, twisting and winding back towards Siena. The air is fresh and reinforces the suggestion of flowers until we are overwhelmed by the sweet honey scent of broom, pouring through the window of the car. Anyway you look there is a picture postcard scene, composed of the main pillars of a photo tuscany - cypress, brick farmhouse and hot stone church, with slightly curvedgreen hills behind him. And 'possible to take a bad photo in Tuscany? Well, it is. If I give in to temptation and make any attractive prospect, I'll find the bright light of midday is all in black and white matte around flattens the colors and all waste of my movies before they even begin to orchids. I have the best chance of note, and try to return to light early in the morning or evening, when we magically turn all golden and clear.
We know where the journey - south of Sienasome friends have gone through real meadows full of orchids. The challenge will be to find these places by car, on the gravel road (gravel road) across the landscape. The other challenge is to reach our goal if every few meters, we have a spike of flowers by the roadside and on-site to identify a screeching halt. Fresh from England, an orchid is a rarity at all, but after an hour we were already disillusioned and no longer have "just another stop discoveredOrchid. "
The next day we were up bright and early on our first on the slopes of Monte Amiata. This is an open glade, surrounded by oaks and stunted bingo - a touch of lavish orchid bee, my favorite, with their hairy lip, that looks exactly like a hornet. Now the head start in the morning light and dew drops glistening on the fact that I have to rest to make up for in the damp grass of a good angle. Remember to bring a raincoat next time. Should I have aTripod, but first I'm looking through the camera to select the best examples and best attitude. Some I need to cut the grass around it, or with scissors or carefully flattened down. A grand opening to take care of background, but I do not want any blurring of the grass blowing in the foreground. Tripod kind, easy to read and get a holder, bracket, bracket.
These are the pre-digital days, I'm trans and saturated with color can be seen to be so sure that there are five ThursHalf-angle of attack. I can not turn over at home once I've prepared everything and saw the result. This also means that it must be selective, there are only six shots on a roll of film, so that only the best flowers and best angle.
Passing through the netting, such as bright light, I find a fly orchid, this identity once a blue bottle flies, not as beautiful as the Bee Orchid, but obvious, then the plant for the record, I have almost a fragrant orchids, pink tread a delicate flower. I have toquickly now, before the light becomes too bright and contrasted. Three in the bag and get to go to a bar for a second breakfast with cappuccino and brioche. The film is certainly in a cooler - cars, hot lunch will not do much for them! The central part of the day scouting for shooting at night, then lunch and a siesta. The light does not play well until about 5 clock, but we must be in place by then to do the best. So it is again driving the roads between Buonconvento and CascianoMurlo.
Over the next few days we cross off our list of green winged orchis, pyramidal orchid, lady orchid, orchid, the monkey with a long tail, a man orchid - not so easy to recognize, with its green-yellow, but now we are ' 've got our eye in the form of our orchid jumping from all sides. Many of these orchids are often used in England, but I've never seen one of them, you can see here in Italy are everywhere - do something with agricultural practices, pesticides andall the rest. Here there are a lot of small-scale farmers, subsistence farming is dying out but huge commercial agricultural companies haven't taken over. There are also a lot of woodland and unfarmable hilly slopes. Orchids on the roadsides though, that's just showing off!
At the end of the week it's back to Pisa, hand in the hire car, just slightly dented from overly-steep off-road experiences, and try to persuade the security people to hand search the film bag rather than X-ray it, which could fog the film. They promise that their machine is so modern and foolproof that you can put film through safely but I'm not taking any chances and eventually they agree. So only one more hurdle to go, the lab back home, processing and seeing what I've got - that heart stopping moment before opening the envelope, the huge sigh of relief when you see images on the film, then examining each one carefully and remembering the scent of the Italian countryside in springtime.
